19.05 E03 LAUNCHING – STUDENT WORKSHOP BETWEEN EDUCATION AND PROFESSION

    WEB_A_TA2014_RGB-02

The architectural field work practice competition is an open call for field work practice proposals destined for architectural students, which are covergent with this year’s annualtheme: present!. The objective is to facilitate students’ engagement with the professional body or the community where the practice will take place. We are thus interested in the practice’s value as a link between education and profession or as a means of inserting the students within the profession. “Education is vital in assuring sustainability and a high quality environment. In this scope, it is necessary to develop within communities the ability to understand architecture, landscape architecture and urbanism, as well as the processes of modelling our environment. These politics help to ensure a background of trust, a background in which citizens feel capable of efficiently engaging in he creation and managemnt of a high quality built environment”. (The politics for architecture in Romania 2010-2015)

The proposals should consider the following aspects: the professional body’s perspective on the event, how the event can relate to communities, the event’s educational value. Also, proposals should be practical and well-organized and should include a pre-established list of objectives and results.

The field work practice competition is part of a series of events dedicated to the education category of a_ta 2014, and its objective is to generate debates on the border between Education and Profession.

    16.06 OFFICIAL LAUNCHING EVENT a_ta2014

    PRINT_A_TA2014_CMYK-06

The Timisoara architecture annual a_ta 2014* started Monday, June 16th, from 6.30pm to 22.00pm at Casa Artelor (The House of Arts) on 8 Augustin Pacha st. Aproximately 160 persons attended the event, joining the organising team around the Chestnut courtyard.

The event offered the ideal pretence for the a_ta 2007-2013 retrospective exhibition vernissage. Panels of previous editions’ winning and nominated projects were mounted in an instalation that redefined the space enclosed in the Chestnut courtyard – this introvert space provided the suitable atmosphere for an overview of Timişoara’s best architectural projects in 2007-2013. The exhibition was succesfully crowned, both literally and figuratively, by artist Levente Kozma’s neon installation – the hovering light message “In our days it was different…” pointed nostalgically to the end of a period and to the promise of a new, different approach for a_ta 2014.

In these circumstances, the president of the Timiş branch of OAR (the Romanian Order of Architects), arch. Vlad Gaivoronschi inaugurated the event by addresing a warm welcome to those present and endorsed the initiative to acknowledge the 7 year history of a_ta. Arch. Adrian Ionaşiu, as coordinator of these previous editions, made a brief description of a_ta’s evolution during these years.

This year’s edition coordinator, arch. Oana Simionescu, advanced the concept and structure behind a_ta 2014. The theme for the 2014 annual, present!, was described as an open invitation to participation and involvement in matters concerning city, education, profession and community. A hint in this direction was offered by the introduction of representatives from partner organizations: landscape architect Andrei Condoroş spoke on behalf of the Western branch of the Romanian Landscape Architects Association while artist Levente Kozma explained the Simultan Association’s engagement within the project.

After these speeches concluded, participants were invited to taste a variety of “designed” appetisers and a glass of wine, on the video and audio background offered by SLOWDANCE.

18.06 E01 EXPOSITION OPENING – ARCHITECTURE AND CHILDREN

    WEB_A_TA2014_RGB-02

ARCHITECTURE AND CHILDREN, an event part of the Timisoara architecture annual a_ta 2014, opened the gates of Timisoara’s Western University to children on Wednesday, June 18th!

3rd and 4th graders totalling a number of 14 classes which graduated the DE-A ARHITECTURA IN SCOALA MEA (Playing architecture in my school) optional course this year gathered in the gymnasium of Timisoara’s Western University: the highlight was an exhibition of their homework for the optional course they attended- models of imagined districts and houses. This course’s scope was to develop and promote architectural and built environment education for children. The models materialised a response to the challenge of imagining their dream district/city in view of the newly acquired knowledge during the past school year. Each class’ quarter is the result of a long process of negotiation, in which children gradually played different roles: urbanist, landscape architect, inhabitant etc. This process ensured a common ground for establishing each district’s characteristics: from green spaces to public and private spaces. The result was an extremely varied urban landscape: from car districts and cycling districts to quarters where water replaced streets, from high-density and low-density areas to zones dedicated to public space. Each class well understood that they had to take full responsibility for their district, which did not hinder an explosion of enthusiasm in mounting the exhibition.

Between 11:00 am and 13:00 pm the gymnasium, designed by Hans Fackelmann, quickly soaked with the contagious joy of more than 300 children. They arrived, class by class, each carrying their model and carefully placing it at its designated spot inside the “children’s city”. Volunteer architects handed badges and coloured stickers for voting the favourite model. After all 14 districts took their place and the children’s city was completed, arch. Oana Simionescu, coordinator of the playing architecture program in Timisoara and of the a_ta 2014 organizing team welcomed all the children and explained how to vote their favourite model. Anxious voters, the children then made a tour of all the exhibited models and placed their voting stickers. The most beautiful district voted by the children belonged to class 4E from the “Avram Iancu” no.19 Gymnasium – a green island with a tree-covered hill in the middle, barely constructed. Volunteer architects expressed their vote as well, this time for the most architectural model: the diploma was awarded to class 4D, also from the “Avram Iancu” no.19 Gymnasium : they proposed an urban space, with collective dwellings, green roofs and areas for cars, pedestrians and for the community. The event ended with the awarding of the diplomas and, in a sweet touch, with the offering of gingerbread by the “Codrina” confectionery.

“Architecture and children” was an event organized by the Timiş branch of the Romanian Order of Architects, in partnership with the “De-a arhitectura” Association and is part of an index of events dedicated to education during a_ta 2014.

    ARCHITECTURAL VISIONS ON THE PRESENT

How do YOU perceive the present in architecture?

Today, boundaries encompassing our activity as architects are softening. Because technology is constantly evolving, time accelerates at an unprecedented rate. In this context, a question arises: how has architecture changed and how do we, as professionals, perceive it today?

In essence, the project entitled ARCHITECTURAL VISIONS ON THE PRESENT implies an open call to architects to express their vision, in a graphical manner, in reply to this question: How do you perceive the present in architecture?

Our scope is to collect as many personal views as possible, in order to create a general perspective on how architecture is perceived, in the current spatial and temporal context.

The end-product of this endeavour will be gathered, archived and exhibited during the 2014 Timişoara architecture annual a_ta. The first exhibition will take place on November 10th 2014, in Timişoara. For this reason, completed postcards are to be submitted until November 3rd 2014.

The collection of postacards will also be digitally available for viewing on www.anualadearhitectura.ro.

Postcards will be distributed in all regional branches of the Romanian Order of Architects OAR, where you will be able to get one and, once completed, submit it. Completed postcards can also be sent directly, express or via mail, at the address already marked on the back of the postcard.

ARCHITECTURAL VISIONS ON THE PRESENT is a project developed during the 2014 edition of the Timişoara architecture annual, themed present!. The annual is organized by the Timiş branch of OAR, with the financial support of OAR derived from the architectural services tax.

In follow-up of this year’s theme for a_ta 2014, present!,  POST-ARCHITECTURE ALTERNATIVES [CHRONICLES] is a compilation project, consisting of a collection of stories authored by architects who developed alternative means of existence within the community by orienting their curiosities, thoughts and their life towards remarcable activities.

Architects are invited to share their personal experiences related to alternative activities, also showcasing if and how architecture has influenced them. For this reason, the following line-up of questions has been addressed:

    • How would you introduce yourself to strangers?
    • What made you choose architecture as a profession?
    • How has architecture influenced you personal development?
    • How would you describe your alternative activity to people unfamiliar with it?
    • How has the transition from architecture to your alternative activity occured?
    • How do the two activities influence each other?
    • To what degree are you present in each of the activities?

29.07 P01 COMPETITION LAUNCHING – ARCHITECTURAL ESSAY COMPETITION

    WEB_A_TA2014_RGB-05

The Timiş branch of OAR (the Romanian Order of Architects) has the pleasure of inviting you to participate at the first edition of the architectural essay competition a_ta 2014. The competition, launched for the first time this year, is opened to anyone interested in architectural theory and its manifestations in the local architectural landscape.

Through this initiative the 2014 edition of a_ta, themed “present!”, aims to stimulate and acknowledge the theoretic discourse in architecture and, in doing so, to facilitate a different type of presence than a strictly material one, customary to architecture. The competition’s subject – a critical approach of the relationship between architecture and the economic, political, social, cultural etc. present which contains it – is derived from the necessity to investigate and reconsider architecture’s temporal dimension as a result of the contemporary shift of the architectural character from a producer of objects to a manager of processes.

Students, art/architecture critics, professors, philosophers, theorists, sociologists, architects, urbanists, designers etc. are invited to submit a critical essay on the proposed subject. The award, 2000 lei, will be conferred at the a_ta 2014 gala, in december.

The jury is comprised of 3 members: conf. dr. arh. Francoise Pamfil, prof. dr. arh. Ana Maria Zahariade, prof. dr. arh. Ioan Andreescu.

    Competition timeline:

    - launch: August 1st

    - Q&A: August 1st – August 31st

(questions will be sent by email to contact@anualadearhitectura.ro, answers will be posted on the annual’s site)

    - registration and submission deadline: November 3rd

    - jury deliberations: November 17th – November 30th

    - announcement of winner essay: December 3rd

    - prize award: December 12th

Waiting spaces is an interdisciplinary discourse melting art, architecture and urban culture into a series of artistic interventions in public spaces. Public spaces represent the connective infrastructure of a city; oftenly these are underperceived or even neglected. In today’s socio-political context, public spaces offer information about the city and its culture. We understand public space in an extended sense: from streets and central plazas to collateral spaces (peripheric districts, underused streets, abandoned industrial sites etc). Public space can also be defined by the way people perceive and experiment the city, which ultimately results in the social interaction of its inhabitants. Public spaces are and should be multi-dimensional destinations, offering a variety of experiences.

Waiting spaces I materialized in 2012. The project consisted in visiting and documenting a series of post-industrial sites in Timişoara, which were also used as a background for video documentaries, as suggestions, as a historical context or as metaphors for reflections on the present.

The interest shifted during Waiting spaces II towards the debate on how to take back an increasingly smaller and suffocating public space, by means of cultural actions (artistic installations, posters, performances etc).

This year’s edition is themed BUILDING-SITE CITY: it questions the changing relationship between individuals and public space, its limits and influence on everyday life. A building-site can also be understood as “the ongoing process of creating a literary, artistic or scientific work”.

Artistic interventions (installation, drawing, poster, video projection, sound, performance etc) included in Waiting spaces III aim to generate a speculative process reflecting on the issue of public space and resulting in a fresh perspective on its context.

Invited artists: Estefan Arnold + Anca Benera, Linda Barkasz, Dyslex, Ciprian Homorodean, Vasile Leac, Monotremu, , Nava Spatiala, Mircea Nicolae, Dan Perjovschi, Sergiu Sas, Miklos Szilard, Lavinia Urcan, TamTam.
