Anuala Timișoreană de Arhitectură – a_ta is the most important professional event organized by the Timiş branch of the Romanian Order of Architects (OAR), with the financial support of OAR.

The project’s main objective is to distinguish and promote excellence in architecture and, in doing so, to highlight exemplary professional practices.

Even though a_ta addresses mainly the architectural profession, a major goal of the project is to attract the general public’s interest in quality architecture and to engage it in the architectural phenomenon, of which it is the ultimate beneficiary. To this purpose, the a_ta events have a public dimension – the exhibition, debates, workshops and conferences are open to everyone – and a formative one – by exposing the community to the values of quality architecture.

This year’s concept – present! – has this major goal as its starting point, thus generating a form of curating that highlights and at the same time questions different types of processes that take place as part of an architect’s path within context: the educational process, the process of buiding a practice, the relations with communities, the project, a discourse, etc.

We used the same type of process for the CONFERENCES – which represent a collection of different practice typologies, interesting  either becauseof their typical concept for building, because of the manner in which an architect might have chosento associate with others or with the community, or for their architectural discourse regarding the physical and theoretical background we are living within in the present.

 

ARCHITECTS ABOUT ARCHITECTURE is, in conclusion, a collection of different ways of understanding what architecture might mean in the present.

UNULAUNU (one to one ,-en) is Romina Grillo, Ciprian Rasoiu, Liviu Vasiu, Matei Vlasceanu and Tudor Vlasceanu. We first joined forces in 2010 driven by a simple wish of doing architecture and later we found enough commune and also conflictual points to convince that we should work together. Besides own projects, we enriched our experience working in offices like: OMA / Rem Koolhaas-Rotterdam / Hong Kong, Christian Kerez- Zürich and Valerio Olgiati-Chur, living and collaborating with offices from Paris, Dubai, Zürich, Oslo, Berlin, Bruxelles and Stuttgart. We are involved in academic activities, teaching at: ETH- Zürich, Accademia di Architettura di Mendrisio, Porto Academy, University of Architecture Ion Mincu. Our first project was the competition and building of the national pavilion of Romania at the Biennale di Architettura of Venice 2010. The success at the prestigious exhibition and the fruitful collaboration gave us the opportunity to start an office.

Space Caviar

Tamar Shafrir is a writer and designer based in Genoa, Italy. Her work has been published in Domus, Volume, Abitare, and Printing Things (Gestalten, 2014), and she was the catalogue editor for the first Istanbul Design Biennial. She currently lectures at the Design Academy Eindhoven master's programme. In 2013, she founded Space Caviar, a design research collective, with Joseph Grima. The studio has presented projects and exhibitions at the 2014 Venice Architecture Biennial, Design Miami/Basel, Atelier Clerici in Milan, the Shenzhen Biennale of Urbanism\Architecture, and EXD'13 in Lisbon. As the curators of the 2014 Biennale Interieur, the studio has recently edited SQM: The Quantified Home (Lars Müller, 2014), a book on the transformation of the domestic space over the past century.

Critic, writer and curator [but she prefers Professional Amateur]. Her [net]work is a real hub linking several publications and actors on architecture and theory. Editor at Quaderns and contributing editor for different blogs and magazines, she has written articles for Domus, Volume, The New City Reader [Istanbul edition] and MAS Context among others. She has been invited to present her work in events like Postópolis! DF, and the international architectrure festival Eme3. Associate Curator for "Adhocracy", first commissioned for the Istanbul Design Biennial in 2012 and exhibited at The New Museum, NYC [May 2013] and Lime Wharf, London [Summer 2013]. Curator, with César Reyes Nájera, of the third Think Space programme with the theme 'Money'.
Co-founder of the independent dpr-barcelona, an architectural research practice based in Barcelona, dealing with three main lines: publishing, criticism and curating. Their work explore how architecture as discipline reacts in the intersection with politics, technology, economy and social issues. Their publications, both digital and printed, transcend the boundaries of conventional publications, approaching to those which are probably the titles of architecture in the future.
Ethel Baraona Pohl likes to smell books. She doesn't like vanilla ice cream… but those grassy notes with a tang of acids with hint of vanilla and mustiness is irresistible for her. Since a youngster she has been smelling printed pages. Now she is also convinced that networked words have quantum scents that we all are now.

 XML is an architecture practice founded in Amsterdam by Max Cohen de Lara and David Mulder van der Vegt in 2008. Their work is characterized by a research-driven approach and ranges from the scale of developing a series of scenarios for organizing the Olympics in the Netherlands for the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment to designing an installation for de Apple Arts centre in Amsterdam. Projects include the design for a new UN headquarters in Bonn, an arts pavilion in Hong Kong and researching the architecture of plenaries halls of parliaments around the world.  
This Summer, the office participates in Rem Koolhaas’ 14th Venice International Architecture Biennial in Venice and has been shortlisted for the Prix de Rome 2014, the oldest and largest Dutch state prise for Architects under 40. XML is directing the two year Master Program ‘Designing Democracy’ at the Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam.

Raphael Zuber

Raphael Zuber studied architecture until 2001 at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETHZ). In the same year he opened a practice in Riva San Vitale, in 2003 his own office in Chur. His first building is the schoolhouse Grono which was completed in summer 2011. Among his major projects are the ethnographic museum Neuchâtel, the office building in Monte Carasso and the University campus SUPSI in Mendrisio. His articles and works have been published in several journals including Abitare, archithese and The Architectural Review. Raphael Zuber has taught at the Accademia di architettura di Mendrisio, at Bern University of Applied Sciences, at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, at ETH Zürich and at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design AHO.
